The photo above is of the first Swampscott Dory I built, in about 1978. I built another one a few years ago for the owner’s son. The first one was about worn out from 30 years or so of constant use. I have built 7 or 8 Swampscotts. I was one of the first to combine traditional and modern construction techniques, using marine plywood sheathed in fiberglass and epoxy for the bottom and garboards (first side plank at the bottom), with traditional framing and cedar topsides planking.

Here is a letter from Ken W. that he sent to me about the Stretch Gloucester Gull that I built for him recently, and a couple of photos. Fall is much earlier in Quebec…
Dear Walter,
We hope that this testimonial pleases you as after all, you have provided us with an enormous amount of enduring pleasure. Our 2021 Old Wharf Dory Gloucester Gull that you so lovingly built for us is a Gem, we are totally enamoured with this boat. Your advice in choosing the Stretch Version of the Gull, the Sapele wood, and how to have it built was very appreciated and totally in sync with our desires. It is very beautiful, it pleases and even astonishes everyone who see it, and when we are rowing “Dancing Diamond” we are delighted with our choice of boat, and Builder!
Thank you Walter, this Gull is an heirloom.
